THE PROJECT

A cultural nod without a hagiography.

The name is the story. Mirtala is a homage to a friendship between two matriarchs — one from India, one from Mexico — whose families grew close over decades of cross-continental visits, shared meals and the kind of hospitality that makes food mean something beyond the plate. The photographs are not purely decoration: they are the two families together, across years and continents. This is how Rishad learned what the cuisine of Nuevo León truly is. As a result, Northern Mexican menu is specific and serious: British Wagyu barbacoa slow-cooked for sixteen hours in limestone pots, Sonoran toin collaboration with a tequila producer in Juárez. Day Studio’s brief was to create a room equal to all of that.

The result is a concept-driven hospitality interior that works all day: The material-led palette carries that warmth without visual shorthand. The walls are finished in a soft plaster toned paint that reads differently at nine in the morning and nine at night: pale and fresh for brunch, deepening to warm amber by dinner. The herringbone terracotta tile floor, the woven rattan ladder-back chairs, the dark olive green buttoned leather banquette add a premium but comforting layering. The room accumulates detail the way a well-loved family restaurant does.

The bar is the room’s anchor — richly veined marble on ribbed oak, opaline dome pendants above, the Bordeaux-tiled bar back glowing behind the spirit shelf. The aged mirror frames the banquette and doubles the depth. Space planning flows from bar through dining room to mezzanine. Warm, focussed, rooted in something real.

“Mirtala feels like the start of a new chapter: the sort of ambitious independent that both gives locals something to be proud of and gives Londoners a reason to make the journey west. Chiswick is all the richer for having it. ”
